About CIB
The CIB is a prominent international research organisation within the property, construction and built environment fields. It addresses a wide range of issues affecting the construction, use and management of the built environment from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. It hosts an impressive range of international academic conferences which attract around 5000 participants per year and has published a plethora of influential research outputs, many of which have been adopted as international standards across the world.
Its activities take place within a series of permanent interdisciplinary subject groupings known as working commissions as well as within smaller, specialised, task groups which address particular issues over a relatively short time scale. There are currently around 50 working commissions and task groups, all of which are listed below. These include the various law related task groups indicated by a hypertext link.
CIB was established in 1953 with the support of the United Nations as part of its efforts to rebuild the European infrastructure for building and construction research following the ravages of the Second World War. Since then both its scope and membership have seen considerable expansion as witnessed by the breadth of interests addressed by its various working commissions and task groups. At present about 500 organisations are members of CIB from whom about 5000 individual experts participate in its working commissions and task groups.
The full name of the CIB is the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction. However, it is more usually known by the acronym of its former name, "Conseil International du Batiment" (CIB). The CIB has a web site at http://www.cibworld.nl/.
